Last week our swimmers took part in their second BUSL match of the year. It was an amazing competition and was very close between the two teams. Durham had some amazing swims and come home with the win! This means we’ll be moving onto the next round of BUSL! Well done to everyone who competed and thank you to @nuswim_ for hosting.

MOVEMBER FUND RAISER

This Sunday our swimmers will be completing a fund raiser for MOVEMBER! We will be doing a 5k run starting from Freemans quay (of course) in our swimming costumes! We’re doing the run at 9am in the morning so it’s going to be nice and warm….

We’re hoping to raise as much money as possible for such an amazing cause! Any donations are greatly appreciated! The link is in our bio to donate!

Later today our swimmers are taking on Newcastle in our second BUSL match of the year! Good luck to everyone competing, let’s goooo!!

Last weekend our swimmers competed at short course BUCS! It was an amazing weekend filled with pbs, finals and multiple university records were broken! A huge well done to everyone that competed and a massive thank you to everyone who supported the team and made sure the weekend ran smoothly.

This weekend our swimmers will be travelling to Sheffield to take part in BUCS short course national championships!

36 of our swimmers will be competing in a wide variety of races. We’re excited to see some fast racing and records being broken.

This year DUSC is taking part in Movember to support the incredible work being done by the charity to tackle mental health, suicide, prostate cancer and testicular cancer!

It’s that time of the year again…..our first BUSL match of the season is taking place this Wednesday! After a very successful BUSL season last year we’re hoping to achieve even more this year!

Thank you to everyone who trialed either last Thursday or this morning! It was great to see so many of you!

We will be sending out emails this afternoon and tomorrow morning to confirm places in our performance or development squads. Due to such a high standard of trials this year we do not have enough space for everyone to join our team. If you have been unsuccessful in joining our team this time, we will have another set of trials at the beginning of second term if you’d like to try again!

Congratulations to everyone who has achieved a place on our team!! On Wednesday the 9th we will have a welcome day for all new joiners. This includes a session in the morning from 7.30-9.00am at Freemans Quay, which is exclusive to new joiners. Then in the evening we will have our first social of the year! This will start at 7.30 at Josephine Butler bar. The theme is SWIMMING so make sure to wear as much swimming gear as possible. There will be a prize for the best dressed….

We encourage all new joiners to attend both the swimming session and social as it will be a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other and meet returning members of the team!

Find out more about the different types of squad we have on offer…

At DUSC we have two different squads.
Our performance squad is aimed at swimmers with a high level of swimming experience, ranging from county to national level. This squad is perfect for swimmers wanting to continue competing and would like more access to training.
Our development squad is aimed at people who have a love for the sport and have some experience, but might not of previously been competitive. This squad is ideal for people that want to continue swimming at university and improve on their technique but do not necessarily want to take part in competitions.

We hope everyone can find a squad that offers the right level of training and commitment they would like. None of our sessions are compulsory for either squad but we encourage people to come to as often as they can.

Both squads make up DUSC and we want to make sure everyone is included in all aspects of the team. Both teams are invited and encouraged to come to all social events. We want everyone to be involved in the team!

Last but certainly not least, meet James out s&c sec for next year. James joined in his 2nd year at Durham and has played a big role in BUSL competitions and even won the Great North Swim SwimRun!

As strength and conditioning coach, James hopes to run sessions that will help to improve every individuals swimming performance. James also believes this is an another opportunity to bond more with the team!

Meet our women’s welfare Fiona. Fiona joined the team last year and has been a friendly face to everyone since!

Next up we have Kenneth our mens welfare for next year. Kenneth played a big role in the team last year, taking part in the BUSL final to get our team to 4th place.

Kenneth wants to use his previous swimming experience and work alongside with our female welfare officer to provide the guidance and support the team needs. He hopes to not only help every swimmer meet their true potential but also create a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone to thrive in.

Next up, meet Amy our kit sec. Amy joined DUSC last year and has been a great addition to the team, competing at both SC and LC BUCS.

As kit sec Amy is aiming to deliver high quality training and competition kit quickly for when it is required throughout the year.

Meet Daisy our media sec for next year. Daisy has previous experience in this role as she was also media sec last year!

This year Daisy aims to post exciting content to keep everyone up to date with what DUSC is up to. She wants to show both our development and performance swimmers achievements. Daisy encourages everyone to ask any questions through email or DMs!

Meet the second half of our social secs Katy! Katy was integral part of the team last year, taking part in both SC and LC BUCS, as well as all the socials of course!

Katy has been swimming her whole life and cannot wait to help bring the team together next year. And of course most importantly plan the best socials ever!

Meet Joe one half of our socials secs for next year! Joe joined DUSC last year and has been an active and enthusiastic participant at every social!

Over the next year Joe hopes to be able to build up the swimming community within Durham and wants to encourage people to form lasting friendships in and out of the pool.

Meet our treasurer for this year, Lizzie! Lizzie was part of both our BUCS and BUSL relays last year.

As treasurer Lizzie is responsible for organising the clubs finances. Lizzie is available if anyone has any questions or needs any help with anything regarding finances. She wants to make DUSC as accessible as possible!

Next up, meet Jake our club secretary for the year! Jake is re-joining us after a placement year in Finland and has been an integral part of the team in previous years.

In this role Jake is hoping to ensure the smooth running of the club, involving mainly administrative tasks but also assisting the captain where needed. Jake wants to organise charity events throughout the year to expand on the great work done at the Great North Swim in previous years.

Meet Rose the other half of our captain duo! Rose has been working alongside Adam to get ready for the start of the 24/25 year and can’t wait to meet everyone at the freshers fair!

As captain Rose wants to communicate with each swimmer to establish individual goals and targets. Rose then aims to develop personal plans and strategies to help each swimmer reach their goals.

Meet one of our captains Adam! Adam has previous experience being on the exec as he was our secretary last year. Adam is also a large part of DUSC as he has broken made club records and competed in BUCS and BUSL finals!

Adam is aiming to ensure everyone has an easy transition into university swimming and not only reach their potential in the sport but also enjoy being part of DUSC from the minute they join the team!

Adam T: 2nd- 5km
Becca: 1st female, 2nd overall- 2 mile
Adam D: 3rd male, 5th overall- 2 mile
Milly: 3rd female, 6th overall- 2 mile

This weekend 16 of our swimmers will be taking part in the Great North Swim!
Swimmers will be taking part in a variety of races including: 2 mile, 5km, 10km or the SwimRun.
We are hoping to raise money for a thrombosis UK. This charity is very close to our hearts as they supported one of our swimmers late last year.
We would greatly appreciate any donations that can be made!

Some action shots from our team’s performance last weekend at BUSL! What an amazing performance from our team, this year we achieved our highest ever finish! Coming 4th is a great achievement, next year let’s see if we can make it onto the podium….
